Leaving WordPress without losing your search rankings

Companies leaving WordPress are usually motivated by performance, security patching, or a plugin stack nobody understands. All good reasons. The risk they underestimate is the traffic they already have.

A site with years of history has accumulated ranking signals against specific URLs. Handled carelessly, a migration throws that away, and the recovery takes months.

Inventory before you build

Export every URL that exists, with its traffic and inbound links. Search Console, analytics, and a crawl of the live site.

You will find pages nobody remembers that quietly bring in meaningful traffic - an old comparison post, a support article that ranks for a long-tail query. Those need a destination.

Preserve URLs, or redirect every one

Keeping the existing URL structure is the safest option and worth real compromise in the new information architecture.

Where that is impossible, every old URL needs a 301 to the closest equivalent page. Not to the homepage - a bulk redirect to the root reads as a soft 404 and drops the equity you were trying to keep.

The details that get missed

• Image URLs, if they are linked or ranking in image search
• The RSS feed, which other sites may consume
• `sitemap.xml` regenerated and resubmitted
• `robots.txt` - and check the staging `noindex` did not ship
• Canonical tags on every page
• Structured data that plugins were emitting for you
• Trailing-slash behaviour, which changes between platforms

That last one silently doubles every URL if you get it wrong.

Measure the recovery

Expect a small dip for a couple of weeks - that is normal as crawlers re-map the site. What is not normal is a dip that does not recover within about a month.

Watch Search Console for crawl errors and coverage daily for the first fortnight. Most migration damage is fixable if you catch it early, and permanent if you notice a quarter later.
